"The Istanbul Convention, which will enter into force on 1 August, constitutes the first legally binding document to specify the different forms of violence against women and introduces a comprehensive legal framework for prevention and response," today said Maria Giannakaki (Greece, SOC), member for Greece of the parliamentary network "Women Free from Violence" and General Rapporteur on combating racism and intolerance.
"Despite the efforts to support and expand existing structures for prevention of violence and support to victims, the phenomenon cannot be tackled effectively in the absence of a suitable legal framework", stressed Ms Giannakaki. "It puts an end to impunity for perpetrators and to the lack of protection for the victims. I urge all the countries that did yet not ratify the Istanbul Convention, among which my own, Greece, to proceed to it without further delay," she said.
On the occasion of the entry into force of the Istanbul Convention, Ms Giannakaki visited the Counseling Centre for Abused Women of Drapetsona – Keratsini Municipality. The centre's employees informed her about their work and the problems they faced. They also discussed about future actions aiming at raising awareness among the population on violence against women, which distinguishes no cultural, social and economic strata.
